I’m an impulsive person, especially when it comes to book shows and charity. So, when I came across a thunderclap for a book show in London, Ontario that was raising money for Wounded Warriors Canada, I filled in an application two minutes later and was booked to attend Ignite your Soul in London, Ontario.
As the date came closer, I became more apprehensive about the choice I made. Not all book festivals are equal. There were a few red flags in my mind: the actual signing event was from 1-4 pm; readers had to purchase tickets to the events; and most of the other authors appeared to be from the romance/errotica genre. It’s a fair drive from Burlington and I opted out of grabbing one of the reserved hotel rooms for authors.
Big mistake! I was completely blown away at how amazing this event was. Attending authors gathered from all over Canada and the United States. These writers knew what they were doing and it was obvious they did it well. They were also some of the nicest people I have ever met.
The event itself was put together by local authors Crystal St. Clair and J.M. Walker. It was well organized and classy. For a reasonable fee, you received a table with linen for the signing, bottles of water and a snack, as well as a buffet style dinner for both the author and their helper.
Between pre-orders for the event and sales from the signing, I ended up having my personal best single-day event of the year and in only 3 hours! On top of that, I made some wonderful new friends, bought some books for my personal collection and had fun.
The best part – the event ended up raising $2,000.00 for Wounded Warriors Canada. That’s an amazing feat in itself.
I offer a big round of applause for everyone who was involved: the organizers, the volunteers, the authors, the model(s), the assistants and the readers.
It just goes to show, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Next year, I am going to make it a mini-vacation for the weekend and not miss out on any of the fun.
